Gas Log Splitters

HP and tonnage usually scale together. A 5–7HP engine drives a 20–25 ton splitter, 7–9HP handles 27–34 tons, and 13–16HP+ powers 37+ tons or kinetic models. Bigger engine = more torque for tough hardwood and faster cycle times. Don't undersize — an underpowered engine slows cycles and stresses the motor.

All three are reliable. Honda has the longest commercial track record and best resale — usually 5+ years of trouble-free use. Kohler is the workhorse mid-tier with comparable durability at a lower price. Briggs & Stratton is the value pick — solid for homeowner use, slightly shorter expected life. Splitting commercially? Honda. Regular homeowner use? Kohler or Briggs is plenty.

Recoil start means pulling a cord — simpler mechanism, fewer parts to fail, slightly cheaper. Electric start uses a key or button — easier on cold mornings or anyone with shoulder/back issues. If you split occasionally and don't mind a few pulls, recoil is fine. If you split often or in cold weather, electric start is worth the upgrade.

Yes — but cold weather makes gas engines harder to start. Below freezing, you'll need a longer choke and more pulls (or electric start). Best practices: keep fresh fuel (under 30 days old), use a fuel stabilizer if storing, and keep the splitter above 0°F when possible. Honda and Kohler engines cold-start more reliably than budget brands.

Less than you'd think. Standard upkeep: engine oil change every 25–50 hours, air filter clean/replace yearly, spark plug every 100–150 hours, and check hydraulic fluid annually. Most of our gas log splitters 20-ton and up are tow-ready with a 2" coupler — pull them behind a truck, SUV, ATV, or tractor with the right hitch. Smaller splitters are usually wheeled and not rated for highway towing. If you need to legally tow on public roads, check the spec sheet for DOT-approved tires and lights.
