Frequently Asked Questions

What size gas engine do I need?

Engine size and tonnage go up together, but high tonnage does not always need a huge engine. In our collection, 20 to 24-ton splitters run Honda GC160 or GX160 engines, 27 to 37-ton models run engines like the 6.5HP Kohler and the Honda GC190, GX200, and GX270, and the biggest production splitters use a Honda GX390 or GX630. A larger engine mainly adds torque for tough hardwood and keeps cycle times steady under load.

Honda, Kohler, or another engine: which should I pick?

Honda powers most of our gas log splitters, from the GC series on homeowner models to the commercial GX series on heavier units. Kohler powers the DK2 OPS227 and is a proven engine for regular firewood work. SuperHandy models use their own 209cc to 389cc engines and are the budget-friendly choice. Whichever you choose, fresh fuel and regular oil changes matter more than the badge on the engine.

Recoil start or electric start: which is better?

Recoil start means pulling a cord, a simpler setup with fewer parts to fail. Electric start uses a key or button, which is easier on cold mornings or for anyone with shoulder or back issues. In this collection, the Ramsplitter H34 and the Blacks Creek 20T-HD have electric start. If you split occasionally and don't mind a few pulls, recoil is fine. If you split often or in cold weather, electric start is worth it.

Will a gas log splitter start in cold weather?

Yes, but cold weather makes any gas engine harder to start. Below freezing, expect a longer choke and more pulls, or choose an electric start model. Keep fuel fresh (under 30 days old), add fuel stabilizer before storage, and keep the splitter out of the worst cold when you can.

How much maintenance does a gas log splitter need?

Less than you'd think. Change the engine oil every 25 to 50 hours, clean or replace the air filter yearly, replace the spark plug every 100 to 150 hours, and check the hydraulic fluid once a year. Follow the engine manual for exact intervals. The hydraulic system is mostly closed and rarely needs attention unless a hose gets damaged. See our hydraulic fluid change guide.

Can I tow a gas log splitter behind my vehicle?

Many of our gas log splitters are built to tow, including road-towable models from Iron & Oak, Ramsplitter, Brave, and BravePro, and several ship with a 2-inch coupler. Smaller wheeled splitters like the SuperHandy models are meant for moving around the property, not highway towing. Check each product page for the towing rating, tires, and coupler size before pulling one on public roads.

Which gas log splitters have a Honda engine?

Most of this collection runs Honda power. Brave and BravePro splitters use Honda GC and GX engines, Iron & Oak models use the Honda GX160 and GX270, and NorthStar uses the GX270, GX390, and GX630. The Ramsplitter HV20-3, Ramsplitter H34, and Blacks Creek 20T-HD also run Honda engines. The DK2 OPS227 uses a Kohler engine, and SuperHandy models use their own engines.

Where can I read more before choosing a gas log splitter?

We have written up the decisions that actually change which machine you should buy. What size log splitter do you need walks through tonnage against the wood you are really cutting. 25 ton vs 35 ton puts numbers on where the extra money starts paying for itself. Gas vs electric covers when gas is worth the maintenance and when it is not. Horizontal vs vertical matters most if you are handling heavy rounds on your own. And fast cycle time splitters is the one to read if you are splitting for volume rather than for your own woodpile.
