How much tractor HP do I need to run a 3-point log splitter?
Most 3-point log splitters need at least 18–25 PTO HP for a 22-ton splitter, and 30+ HP for 30-ton+ models. PTO HP (not engine HP) is what matters — that's what runs the hydraulic pump. Compact tractors (Kubota L, John Deere 1-Series) usually have enough. Sub-compacts may struggle with bigger splitters. Check your tractor's PTO HP rating before buying.

Does my tractor need a 3-point hitch with a Cat 1 or Cat 2 fit?
Most of our 3-point log splitters fit Category 1 hitches (the standard on compact and sub-compact tractors). Larger commercial splitters may require Cat 2 (mid-size farm tractors). Check the lower link spacing on your tractor — Cat 1 is 26" wide, Cat 2 is 32". Most splitters list which category they fit in the spec sheet.

PTO splitter vs hydraulic splitter — what's the difference?
PTO splitters use your tractor's PTO shaft to drive their hydraulic pump. Stand-alone hydraulic splitters have their own gas/electric engine and pump. How fast does a 3-point tractor log splitter cycle?
Cycle times depend on your tractor's PTO speed and the splitter's hydraulic specs. Most 3-point splitters run 8–14 seconds per cycle — comparable to a standalone hydraulic splitter. Higher tractor PTO speed (540 vs 1000 RPM) and bigger pumps mean faster cycles. If you're running a stationary splitter on the 3-point all day, an inline accumulator can speed things up further.

Can I split logs while the splitter is on the 3-point hitch?
Yes — that's exactly how 3-point splitters work. Mount it to the hitch, lower it to working height, engage the PTO, and split. For best ergonomics, keep the splitter low to the ground (vertical orientation) so you can roll heavy logs in instead of lifting. Some operators detach for static splitting, but most use it hitched. Do I need to disconnect my hydraulics to use a 3-point log splitter?
