Tree Shears

Tree Shears

2 Products

A chainsaw crew drops trees one at a time, on the ground, in among the brush. A tree shear cuts standing timber from the seat of your skid steer and sets it down where you want it. For clearing a wooded lot or selectively taking out unwanted trees, it changes the pace of the job entirely.

We carry two Quick Attach shears. The EZ Axe cuts trees up to 12 inches using a 5 by 12-inch cylinder driving a 1-inch AR400 abrasion-resistant blade, at 760 pounds. It is the sensible choice for mesquite, cedar, dogwood, alder, juniper and osage orange, and for general lot clearing.

The Power Axe is the largest single-blade tree shear on the market. A 5.5 by 14-inch cylinder generates over 48 tons, roughly 20 percent more than the nearest competitor, cutting 17-inch softwood and 14-inch hardwood through a 180 lb, 1.25-inch AR400 blade.

Both cut close to the ground, so you are left with a low stub rather than a knee-high stump. Both rotate 90 degrees manually to place cut trees deliberately, and the Power Axe offers an optional hydraulic rotation package. For what is left in the ground afterwards, see our Stump Grinders.

Why a Tree Shear

  • Cut From the Seat: No chainsaw crew on the ground among falling timber.
  • Near Ground Cutting: Leaves a low stub, so there is less for a grinder to do later.
  • AR400 Blades: Heat treated abrasion-resistant steel that holds an edge through hardwood.
  • 90 Degree Rotation: Lay cut trees where you want them rather than where they lean.

How to Choose a Tree Shear

  • Tree Diameter: 12 inches on the EZ Axe, 17-inch softwood and 14-inch hardwood on the Power Axe.
  • Machine Capacity: 760 lb against 950 lb. Both hang out front, so check your rated operating capacity.
  • Hardwood or Soft: Dense hardwood at the top of any shear's range cuts slower than softwood of the same diameter.
  • Rotation: Manual on both as standard, with a hydraulic rotation package available on the Power Axe.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a tree shear, and how does it differ from a saw?

A tree shear is a hydraulic attachment that grips a standing tree and cuts through it with a blade, like a giant pair of loppers on your loader. Nobody stands near the tree, there is no chainsaw running, and the shear holds the trunk after the cut so you place the tree where you want it rather than watching where it falls. For clearing small-diameter trees and brush at volume, it is faster and considerably safer than felling by hand.

What is the difference between the EZ Axe and the Power Axe HD?

The EZ Axe at $5,495 is the utility model, sized for everyday clearing of smaller trees, fence lines and brush. The Power Axe HD at $7,995 is the heavy-duty version, built for larger diameters and sustained commercial work. The $2,500 between them buys cutting capacity and structural strength. If you are clearing regrowth, fence rows and saplings on your own land, the EZ Axe covers it. If you are doing land clearing as a job, the HD is the one that will still be working in five years.

What machine do I need to run a tree shear?

A skid steer, compact track loader or tractor with a quick attach plate and auxiliary hydraulics. The hydraulics are the part people forget: a shear does nothing without a hydraulic supply to close the blade, so standard flow auxiliary hydraulics are a requirement rather than an option. Check your machine's flow rate and pressure before ordering. Tell us what you are running and we will confirm compatibility first, on +1 (307) 212-8335 or sales@logbearworks.com.

How big a tree will a shear cut?

Each shear has a rated maximum diameter, and the honest guidance is to stay well inside it. Rated capacity is measured on clean, straight, healthy stems. A forked trunk, a leaning tree under tension or hard dry hardwood all effectively reduce what the shear can manage. Pushing a shear to its limit repeatedly is how you damage blades and bend structure. For anything close to the rating, or for large mature trees, a shear is the wrong tool and you want a saw and a proper felling plan.

Tree shear or forestry mulcher: which do I need?

They do opposite things with the material. A shear cuts the tree and leaves it whole, so you still have to move, stack or process it, but you keep usable wood. A mulcher grinds everything into chips on the spot, leaving nothing to haul but nothing to sell either. If the wood has value to you as firewood or timber, shear it. If your only goal is to make the land clear and you do not want the debris, mulch it. See our forestry mulchers collection for the alternative.
