Grapples

Tractor grapples mount to your tractor's loader and are built for moving logs, brush, and debris around a property. Skid steer grapples mount to a skid steer or track loader quick attach plate, which gives you more force and better maneuverability. Root grapples are a shape rather than a machine type: wider, deeper tines that dig roots and rocks out of the ground. Match the grapple to the machine you own first, then to the job.

Size to your machine's lift capacity and the work. In this collection, mini skid steers and compact track loaders take the 36 and 44-inch mini grapples. Compact tractor loaders suit the 48 and 60-inch tractor grapples. Full-size skid steers run 60 to 85-inch root, rake, and bucket grapples. Wider grapples grab more per pass but add weight, and too wide will eat into your lift capacity.

Bucket grapples have a closed bottom, so they scoop loose material as well as grabbing logs. Root grapples have spaced tines on the bottom that let dirt fall through while you pull roots, rocks, and debris. Rake grapples have spaced tines top and bottom, which is what you want for clearing brush and storm debris. See our full comparison.

Most grapples work within standard tractor and skid steer flow, but check each product page against your machine. As examples from this collection, the Quick Attach Versa Grab lists 25 GPM and the Versa Grab Mini 15 GPM, and several Ignite models are rated to 3,000 or 3,500 PSI. A tractor needs front loader hydraulics with at least one auxiliary outlet, or a third function valve kit added.

Weights in this collection run from 165 lbs on the 46-inch stump bucket grapple and 227 lbs on the 48-inch compact tractor grapple up to 920 lbs on the 82-inch root grapple and more than 1,100 lbs on the largest Demo-Dozer. That weight comes straight off your usable lift capacity, so a 600 lb grapple on a loader rated for 1,500 lbs leaves 900 lbs for the load. Always factor grapple weight when sizing.

For most compact tractor loaders, the 48-inch grapple at 227 lbs or the 60-inch at 366 lbs is the practical range, and both run at 3,000 PSI. The 48-inch uses a single cylinder and the 60-inch a dual cylinder, which gives a more even clamp on uneven loads. Grapples in this collection run from about $1,755 to just under $11,000, and the spread is driven by width, build and how much the attachment has to do. Stump bucket grapples start around $1,755. Compact tractor grapples sit around $2,530 to $2,990. Rake grapples for brush and storm debris run roughly $2,570 to $5,405 depending on width. Root grapples for digging and sifting run about $4,255 to $4,600. Rock buckets and rock grapples sit around $4,095 to $6,195. At the top, the multi-purpose Versa Grab reaches about $10,945 for the skid steer and three point version. Width is usually the single biggest driver inside each type, so buy the width your machine can lift rather than the widest one you can afford.

Horsepower is the wrong number to size a grapple by. What actually limits you is lift capacity and hydraulic flow. On weight, the grapples here run from about 165 lbs on the 46-inch stump bucket grapple up to over 1,100 lbs on the largest Demo-Dozer, and that weight comes straight off your machine's rated lift before you have picked anything up. On flow, check the requirement on each product page against your machine's auxiliary output: the Versa Grab lists 25 GPM and the Versa Grab Mini 15 GPM.
