How to Choose a Blacks Creek Processor

Annual Cord Volume: Under 50 cords points at the 1250 or 1500. Past 200 cords you want the 2500 or 3000.

Which Blacks Creek firewood processor should I look at?

Log diameter and engine size are the two axes. The Model 1250 and Model 1500 are the entry machines, at 14HP Briggs and Stratton and 13HP Honda respectively, both handling up to 16-inch logs. The Model 2000B-XL steps to a 22HP Honda, 18-inch capacity and a hydraulic belt in-feed. The Model 2250 keeps the 22HP Honda but takes 23-inch logs on a 12-foot in-feed. Above that, the Model 2500 runs 35HP Briggs and Stratton at 23 inches, and the Model 3000 is a 50HP diesel handling 25-inch logs for commercial production. Buy for the largest log you will actually process regularly, not the largest you have ever seen.

What is the difference between the skid steer mount and stand-alone Model 1250?

Same processor, two ways to power it. The skid steer and tractor mount version runs off your host machine hydraulics, so you are not buying another engine and the processor travels wherever the loader goes. The stand-alone version carries its own 14HP Briggs and Stratton, so it works without tying up a machine you might need elsewhere. If your loader sits idle while you process, the mounted version saves you money. If you need the loader moving logs while the processor runs, buy the stand-alone.

Do I need a live log deck and a conveyor, or just the processor?

You can run a processor without either, but they are what turn it from a machine into a production line. A live log deck is a hydraulic chain conveyor, available in 6 to 12-foot lengths, that holds a stack of logs and feeds them to the processor one at a time so you are not loading by hand between every cut. The firewood conveyor, in 16 to 30-foot lengths on a Honda 4.4HP engine, takes the split wood from the processor to a truck, trailer or stack. If you are processing alone, both roughly double what one person can do in a day.

What do Blacks Creek trash racks do?

They filter the bark, chips and fines out of the split wood before it reaches your stack or your customer. They mount either on the processor or on the conveyor. It sounds like a minor accessory, and it is, right up until you are selling firewood by the cord and your customers are complaining about the debris in every load. If you are producing for sale rather than your own stove, a trash rack is one of the cheapest quality improvements available.

How do the Blacks Creek log splitters compare to the processors?

A splitter splits. A processor cuts to length and splits in one operation. The 20T-HD at $7,000 runs a 13HP Honda with electric start and a 4-way hydraulic wedge, and it is road towable. The 30T-HD steps up to a 22HP Honda with a 30-ton ram and the same 4-way hydraulic wedge. If your logs are already bucked to stove length, a heavy-duty splitter is faster and much cheaper than a processor. If you are starting from full-length logs, the processor eliminates the chainsaw work, which is usually the real bottleneck.
