Frequently Asked Questions

What is a rake grapple best used for?

Rake grapples are land-clearing and brush-clearing tools. The spaced tines on top and bottom let dirt and small debris fall through while gripping branches, brush, and storm debris. Best for: brush pile cleanup, storm cleanup, clearing fence lines, raking out leaves and small branches, gathering scattered logs. Less ideal for loose material (use a bucket grapple) or deep digging (use a root grapple).

Rake grapple vs root grapple — what's the real difference?

Rake grapples have lighter, flatter tines on both top and bottom — designed for raking surface debris. Root grapples have heavier, deeply curved tines built for digging into soil. If you're clearing brush piles, leaves, and surface debris, rake grapple is faster and lighter. If you're digging roots, prying stumps, or sifting rocks, root grapple does it better. See the full comparison.

Will a rake grapple work on storm debris and leaves?

Yes — that's its sweet spot. The spaced tines let leaves, dirt, and pebbles fall through while keeping branches, twigs, and larger debris. For ice storm or hurricane cleanup, a rake grapple clears brush piles 5–10x faster than hand work. See more on demolition rake grapples.

What size rake grapple do I need?

Match to your machine. For compact tractors (under 30 HP) and mini skid steers, 36–48". For standard tractors (30–60 HP) and most skid steers, 48–66". For larger skid steers and track loaders doing real volume cleanup, 66–84". Wider rake grapples cover more ground per pass — but check your loader's lift capacity since rake grapples grab a lot of mass at full width.

Can a rake grapple handle small trees and saplings?

Yes. The closing tines grip and snap saplings up to 2–3" diameter, depending on the grapple's clamp force. For larger trees, the grapple holds while you back up and break the trunk loose. For trees over 4–5" diameter, you're better off cutting first and then raking the brush. Rake grapples aren't designed for live tree extraction — they're for clearing already-felled or dead material.

How does a rake grapple mount to my machine?

Skid steer rake grapples ship with universal quick-attach plates fitting Bobcat, Cat, Kubota, John Deere, and most major brands. Tractor rake grapples need to match your loader's quick-attach style (SSQA, Euro/Global, John Deere, etc.). The hydraulic jaws connect to your machine's auxiliary hydraulics — most standard-flow setups handle a rake grapple without modification.
